The road to leadership is no ordinary path. It’s a bumpy ride with peculiar ups and downs. During this journey, every leader ought to come across moments of hesitation or thoughts that hold them back. They are faced with challenges, uncertainty and crowded judgement before they rise.

The ancient wisdom of Bhagavad Gita offers timeless leadership lessons. Arjuna—one of the greatest warriors of his time—stands on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. But as he looks at the opposing army, he sees familiar faces—his teachers, his family, his loved ones— leaving him in a dilemma, whether to fight or not! Overwhelmed, he drops his bow, frozen by doubt and despair. Was he ready to destroy everything he held dear?

“How can I fight this battle? What if I fail? Is this the right path?”

In his moment of crisis, Arjuna turns to Krishna, his charioteer, for clarity. Krishna challenges Arjuna’s perspective, guiding him to see beyond his fear and embrace his true purpose.

Arjuna picks up his bow again—not because his circumstances change, but because his mindset does. He steps forward as a warrior and leader, ready to fulfil his purpose.

This marks Arjuna’s Hero’s Journey, beginning with a moment of crisis where he questions his next step.

As per Joseph Campbell’s concept of the Hero’s Journey, every transformational journey follows three key stages:

🔹 Departure– The hero steps out of the familiar, outside of his comfort zone, often faced with a challenge or inner conflict.

🔹 Initiation– They meet mentors, go through trials, and embrace lessons that shift their perspective.

🔹 Return – Armed with newfound wisdom, they embrace their purpose with clarity and strength.

This journey is never linear. Each stage presents hardships that test the hero’s resolve, trying to break them. All they must do is move forward and overcome the moments of self-doubt, external resistance, and make choices that demand courage. They meet guides or mentors on their way, expectedly or unexpectedly, and embrace victories which are not just external but marked by an internal shift in identity or mindset.

Leadership mirrors this path. The battlefield may not always be literal, but the internal struggle is real. A leader’s departure begins when they step into a role that demands more of them. Their initiation is shaped by experiences that challenge their beliefs and mentors who push them toward growth. And their returnis marked not by power alone, but by the experiences, wisdom and clarity they gain to lead with conviction and rise high.

Every great leader must step beyond their comfort zone, embrace the journey, learn along the way, and emerge transformed.

Arjuna’s Kurukshetra moment is a classic example of this journey. His Departure begins the moment he steps onto the battlefield, called to fulfil his duty but paralysed with doubt. His Initiation unfolds as Krishna guides him toward clarity. Finally, his Return happens when he rises—not as a hesitant warrior, but as a resolute leader, embracing his role with newfound conviction.

Where Are You in Your Hero’s Journey?

Does Arjuna’s journey ring any bells? All leaders too, at some point, stand at such crossroads.

Are you standing at your own Kurukshetra, facing doubts and difficult choices or questioning your path? Seeking a perspective shift to move forward and gain clarity?

Leadership demands tough choices. And real growth happens when we move beyond fear to purpose.

But even the strongest heroes don’t walk the path alone. Sometimes, all it takes is a guide—a mentor, a coach, or a powerful conversation—to help you see what’s already within you.

Who is your Krishna? And what’s the battle you are preparing to face?
